Everyone wants to have sparkling, clear water when they go swimming. Pool filters are part of the trio that controls this. The three components are filtration, circulation and sanitation. When these three things are working properly you will have the beautiful clear water than you desire.
There are three main types of pool filters used today. The types are diatomaceous earth, sand and cartridge. In our area, sand and cartridge are the most popular types. Whichever type you use, one of the key things that will determine if it works correctly is that it is large enough. Pool filters that are too small cannot do the job properly. If all other elements are correct and your filter is functioning but not doing the job, this may be your problem.
Pool filters do not last forever and eventually need to be replaced. If you use a sand filter there are many things that can determine that it is time to replace the sand bed in your filter. Use of certain chemicals or a large amount of sunbathing oil in the water can lead to the sand needing to be replaced. Your sand filter needs to be backwashed when the pressure builds to 8-10 pounds of pressure over the normal clean reading. If the amount of time between backwashes gets shorter and shorter, you may need to replace the sand.
Cartridge pool filters are a popular choice. You do not backwash a cartridge filter. It is removed and a hose is used to wash away the dirt. This is done when the pressure gauge reads 8-10 pounds above normal, the same as with sand filters. Over time, the cartridge will lose its effectiveness and need to be replaced.
